The teams compete in seventeen (17) varsity sports and participate in the Atlantic Coast Conference as well as Division-1 of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). The athletic teams have won a total of four national championships. Clemson University has several notable alumni. One such alumnus is Lt. Col. Aquilla James Dyess of the United States Marine Corps. He is the only person to have received both the Congressional Medal of Honor as well as the Carnegie Medal of Honor. Others include George H. Ross who is the Executive Vice President and Senior Counsel of the Trump Organization, Shawn Weatherly who was Miss Universe 1980 to 1981, and many others.
