Florida State University (or commonly referred to as Florida State or FSU), is situated in Tallahassee, Florida and is a sea-grant and space-grant public research facility. It is the first state university to be established in Florida. The university was instituted in 1851 and is among the ten percent of universities located in the United States that has a Phi Beta Kappa chapter. The university is symbolized by the colors garnet and gold. The Florida State Scentsy warmer features those colors, along with the mascot Chief Osceola.
The only National Laboratory in the State of Florida, the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, is located on the Florida State University campus. This laboratory is responsible for the creation and development of the cancer drug called Taxol. Seminoles is the name given to the athletics teams. The mascots are Osceola and Renegade. Osceola represents the Seminole Chief of that name and he rides an appaloosa horse called Renegade. The teams compete in eighteen varsity sports in Division-1 of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). The Marching Chiefs, the largest college-based marching band in the world, usually accompanies the football teams at their games. Among some of the most notable individuals that attended or graduated from Florida State are Jim Morrison, Burt Reynolds, Robert Urich and Richard Simmons.
