San Diego State University (SDSU) was instituted on March 13, 1897. It is located in San Diego, California and is the oldest and largest institution of higher learning in the San Diego region and the third largest in California. It is a public land-grant research university. The official school colors are gold, scarlet and black. They are nicknamed the Aztecs and the school mascot is the Aztec warrior. The San Diego State Scentsy Warmer represents SDSU by featuring the school colors. The San Diego State University (SDSU) is a leader in the California State University System offering the most doctoral degrees. On June 6, 1963, President John Fitzgerald Kennedy gave the commencement speech just five months before his assassination on November 22, 1963. Prominent alumni of the university include actors/actresses: Art Linkletter, Gregory Peck, Raquel Welch, Marion Ross, and Cathy Najimy; Authors: Andy Rathbone, Constance Reid, among many others; Olympic Gold Medalists: Willie Steele and Arnie Robinson; Other athletes: Marcelo Balboa, Michael Cage, Mark Grace, Freddie Keiaho, Eric Wynalda, and several others. The athletics teams are called Aztecs and are represented by a mascot called Montezuma, the Aztec Warrior. The teams participate in eighteen (18) varsity sports in Division-1 of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in the Big West Conference. Beginning in 2013, the football teams will participate in the Big East Conference.
