Louisiana State University and Agricultural and Mechanical College (more often know as Louisiana State, or LSU) is a land-grant, space-grant and sea-grant facility. It was established in 1853 and classes begun on January 2, 1860. The university is situated in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and has as its official colors, purple and gold. The Louisiana State University’s athletics teams are known as the Fighting Tigers and their official mascot is a Bengal-Siberian Tiger mix named Mike VI. The tiger is housed in a habitat that is in close proximity to the university’s Tiger Stadium. The teams are a part of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) as well as the Southeastern Conference (SEC), participating in fourteen (14) varsity sports.
