The University of Wisconsin is a public, flagship research and land-grant university. The main campus is located in Madison, Wisconsin. The university was instituted in 1848 by Nelson Dewey who was the first governor of Wisconsin. The school officially opened on February 5, 1849. The first female students were admitted to the university in 1863. The athletics teams are called the Badgers and the official university colors are cardinal and white. Badger, known popularly as Bucky Badger, is the name of the costumed mascot that represents the athletics teams. The athletics teams are called Badgers because Wisconsin is the “Badger State”. They participate in Division-1A of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) in the Big Ten Conference.
