Purdue University is located in West Lafayette, Indiana. It was instituted on May 6, 1869 and named after John Purdue who was the chief sponsor of the school. The university is a Land Grant institution. Perdue is a part of the Big 10 Conference and is a well-known world-wide research institution. The official university colors are old gold and black and its nickname is Boilermakers. Purdue University has been highly influential in the American history of aviation. Its aviation technology is highly competitive has expanded to encompass advanced spaceflight technology giving rise to Purdue’s nickname, Cradle of Astronauts. Twenty Two graduates of Purdue have gone on to become astronauts, including Neil Armstrong (the first person to walk on the moon) and Eugene Cernan (the most recent person to walk on the moon). A famous tradition at Purdue is the Fountain Run. Freshmen mark their beginning at the university and graduates mark their exit from the university by running through either the Purdue Mall Fountain or the Loeb Fountain. The Fountain Run usually occurs between April and October. The university is also known for its annual Grand Prix. Students build and race go-carts around a 50-mile, 160-laps track. Thirty-three (33) entries are allowed each year. It is one of the final events during Gala Week. Purdue University belongs to the Big Ten Conference and its sports teams are known as the Boilermakers. The official mascot is a replica Victorian-age locomotive called Boilermaker Special VII. However, there is an X-tra Special (scaled-down version of the Boilermaker Special VII) as well as a costumed mascot named Purdue Pete. Purdue Pete is one of the most recognized symbols of Purdue University. The athletics teams compete in eighteen (18) varsity sports in Division-1 of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Purdue has one of the few college athletic programs that is not funded by student fees or subsidized by the university.
