Northwestern University (UN) was instituted on January 28, 1851 by nine founding members all of the Methodist Episcopal faith, and prominent businessmen. The university officially opened on November 5, 1855. It has locations in Evanston and Chicago in Illinois. In 1869, Roberta Hoag became the university’s first female student and in 1874, Sarah Rebecca Roland was the first female student to receive an undergraduate degree from the university. The Northwestern University’s athletics teams are nicknamed the Wildcats. They are members of the Big Ten Conference in Division-1 of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), competing in nineteen (19) varsity sports. The teams have collectively won twenty-seven (27) championships. The mascot that represents the sports teams is called Willie the Wildcat. The university’s official color is royal purple. The school is known for a tradition called Primal Scream. Three times per year at 9:00 PM on the Sunday before final exams, students all over the campus scream “bloody murder”. The origin of this tradition is unknown. The university has two professors who are Nobel Peace Prize laureates and they are Professor John Pople who received the prestigious prize in 1998 for his work in chemistry, and Professor Dale Mortensen in 2010 for his work in economics. Some alumni that have made their mark in TV and film include Ann Margaret, Warren Beatty, David Schwimmer, Shelly Long and Seth Meyers, to name just a few.
